Microeconomics: A Computational Approach
It's not unusual for a text to devote several pages to using LINDO software and discussing LINDO examples. It is not even unusual for the text to be bundled with a student version of LINDO. What is a bit unusual is for it to be an economics text.
However, Microeconomics: A Computational Approach makes the combination of LINDO and economics seem quite natural. It incorporates the use of linear programming and decision analysis, together with traditional analysis, to study a variety of issues in microeconomics.
In writing the text, author Gerald Thompson worked to better integrate microeconomics and management. "Microeconomics often gets isolated and doesn't get incorporated into teaching management," reports Thompson. "Good management requires deep knowledge of the basic economics of operation, markets, and investment." |

While many microeconomics texts opt for a calculus based approach, Thompson prefers linear programming. "A linear programming model, compared to the traditional model, can be a far simpler model of a segment of reality," Thompson writes in the preface. "Linear programming models generate strong motivation and early reinforcement in the study of models because problems of some interest can be solved after quite limited study."
The text provides a thorough introduction to economics using a variety of models to help the reader build the skills necessary to understand, predict, and guide economic activities. It tries to provide a more realistic approach to understanding resource and product markets by discussing areas such as the role of business decisions, the impact of changes in technology, uncertainty, and the optimal location of activities.
The text includes extensive use of examples, computer exercises, and diagrams and includes a CD containing trial versions of LINDO, LINGO, and What'sBest!.
